When you have twins, your life changes. Not only do you have double the feedings, but you have double everything. Diapers, wipes, clothing, strollers etc. How do moms of twins do it all? Myself having only one child at a time it seemed impossible to keep up with everything that was going on in the baby world.
A Mom of Twins Confession
I decided that I wanted to know what twin life was all about! In comes Alexa (aka my sister). Alexa is a mom of twins and when you talk to her about life with twins and having two other kids, she definitely has it all together (of course she wouldn’t think so if you asked her).
As a parent myself, she has given me so much advice. Open your ears NEW MOMMA!! She has great advice for mom’s with twins and moms with kids alike!!
Alexas pregnancy was not a normal one and she went through some pretty crazy stuff. Today she is sharing with you first hand what it’s like to have twins. YAY!! As well as give you all a must-have list for newbie twin moms to be.

Alexa and the Twins
Having gone through a premature pregnancy not once but twice this girl has endured the hard and makes it look so easy. With her first child, she went into labor at 8 months pregnant. Baby Wyatt was born and only weighed a mere 3.9 lbs. Wyatt, her first born, stayed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for over a month.
Today Wyatt is happy and healthy! A few years later Alexa and Cody were blessed with two more. OMG!! Two for the price of one! What a game changer!
They were identical twins. Shocked, to say the least. Alexa had a traumatic birth with her first child, now she was expecting two more babies!
The Complications When Having Twins
When you realize that you are pregnant with twins it seems to be a normal pregnancy. Until about 6 months along. Things change. At least for her, they did.
She was monitored at least weekly and usually one baby presents different then the other.
Between about 24-26 weeks Baby A (FUN FACT! Twin babies are labeled baby A and baby B for monitoring) had what medical professionals call Intermittent Diastolic flow in the umbilical cord. It is a very technical term that has a large meaning. Alexa had to have numerous dopplers to monitor the blood flow to Baby A.
Alexa spent 10 days in the hospital being monitored to make sure the baby was ok and that she wouldn’t need an emergency Cesarean, talk about boring!

At 32 weeks Alexa went into labor with the babies. A very different labor experience for her as she was given a fibronectin test that is used to determine if you are expected to deliver within the next few days. She was monitored very closely and had very strange contractions as well as other unique symptoms that were not as pronounced with a single birth.

On April 21, 2017, Cambria and Payton were born into the world. The TWINS!!! YAY!! Twin Girls at that! Cambria weighing in at a whopping 3.8lbs and Payton weighed in at 3.11 pounds.
What MIGHTY little ones! So small and precious. These little precious babies spent several months in the Neonatal ICU until they were able to bottle feed and were weaned off of oxygen.

Twin Baby Must Haves
#1 Luvs Diapers
Of course bringing the babies home is something that the family had hoped for since day 1 and not everything was ready for them when they were discharged. Docs wanted everything perfect for them and so did mom!
Two babies need a lot of attention and so so many diapers. If you weren’t aware babies use ALOT and I mean ALOT of diapers. It’s crazy the number of diapers that they use when you are so small.
It’s around 4000 a year I believe and even more wipes! What in the??!!! Definitely something that you need to be prepared for. Alexa as well as myself highly recommends Luvs diapers.
Not only are Luvs diapers cheaper than most, but they also hold it ALL in!! I never had a blow out with my kids (I don’t think). Ok, maybe one. HEHEHE… So you will definitely want to stick with ones that work!

#2 Parents Choice Baby Wipes
Having had two kids myself as I mentioned numerous times before. I always had wipes on hand. Because well… kids make messes! Everywhere! With twins, I couldn’t even imagine the need for wipes in abundance!
That’s why I, as well as Twin Mom Alexa, stuck with Parent’s choice wipes. I liked them because they are durable, thick, super affordable and they come in a LARGE pack!
#3 Gripe Water/ Gerber Soothe
AWWW…. The ever amazing Gripe Water. If you are not familiar with Gripe water it is definitely a must for gassy, fussy babies ( I had a colic baby). This stuff amazing I can’t really describe the way it works but it is very soothing and calming. It has natural ingredients in it that calm the tummy and helps babies rest.
Alexa uses Mommy Bliss day and night time gripe water. Its amazing what they come up with because when I had my first child we had to wing it. Gripe water is great for babies that have GI upset or are fussy and colicky. Gas drops like Mylicon did work to an extent but it didn’t last near as long as Mommy Bliss.
Gerber Soothe was something that I personally used and recommend to everyone that is having a baby. I used this in my kiddos bottle and I am a firm believer that it kept him from getting fussy.
Gerber Soothe is a probiotic formula that is Clinically proven to reduce colic and spit up in infants. And it truly does do what it says it does. A tad pricey for what you get but it is so worth it.
#4 Corona Cream
Funny name and it is actually used for animals… (crickets). But as Alexa says “Don’t knock it til you try it.” This cream will clear up a diaper rash quicker than the original Desitin or other brands. She also says she never used any other cream than this. Personally I have not tried it, as my kids didn’t get diaper rash very often.
#5 Twin Z Pillow (AKA The boppy pillow)
According to twins mom Alexa this item is the most magical thing ever invented. Boppy’s, in general, are amazing but the Twin Z Pillow is the exact same item and very versatile. The middle can be propped up for back support during breastfeeding or bottle-feeding to comfort little ones.
The twin Z Pillow also helped the girls when sitting up, you can put a blanket or pillow in front of them and they used it until they were sitting up straight by themselves. This is an amazing item and so easy to clean also. The coolest part is the Twin Z Pillow comes with a travel bag so you can easily bring it along with you. Click Here to get your Twin, Z Pillow!
#6 Medela Breast Pump
Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of breast pumps out there that are so useful. Even some hospitals will lend you one until you are able to buy one. Having tried several different breast pumps, Alexa as well as myself swear by this breast pump.
Breastfeeding twins is by far the hardest part of the journey because you have one that is hungry and the other waiting to be fed. Using Medela breast pump it pumps the milk out faster and in a more controlled motion than most and believe it or not it comes with TWO BREAST pumps and a storage bag and so much more!
This breast pump is amazing for new twin mommies because you can double pump and save yourself time. Getting things done quickly with twins is a must and this pump does just that.

#7 Soothie Pacifiers
Soothie Pacifiers are a life saver. If it wasn’t for these pacifiers I would have probably pulled my hair out. The pacifiers that the girls got at the hospital are very similar to these and they worked wonders. Pacifiers are for soothing and these definitely speak up to the name.
The cutest thing is, they now have attachments for the pacifiers that are baby animals so the pacifiers don’t get lost. How cute is that?? I thought this was such a great idea, especially for twins. It’s a great way to tell them apart also 🙂

#8 Dr. Brown’s Bottles
Ladies I am going to tell you right now…do not ever buy another bottle when you just coming home from the hospital until you try this bottle first. They are so helpful and reduce gas in little tummy’s and they just make life a little easier.
Having tried numerous bottles throughout the internet and in the stores, nothing beat this bottle. I even purchased a very high dollar bottle, a glass bottle and the 1.50 bottle from walmart. They were either to fast, way to slow, had to much air in them or just leaked everywhere.
Dr. Brown’s bottles are great. The nipples don’t collapse, and they have a venting system that allows the milk to flow freely like breastfeeding. This bottle has been the number one bottle feeding system for several years in a row. It is also clinically proven to reduce colic.

#9 Universal Double Snap and Go Stroller Frame
This universal double snap and go stroller frame is a great way for you to just snap in both car seats and go. You can push this little cart around the store with you, through the park or down the street. Its super simple to set up and so convenient when you have two car seats to drag along with you.

#10 Double Stroller
As the girls (twins) got older it was easier to just put them both in a double stroller. Rather than lug around two strollers, this stroller helped out quite a bit. The plus is that it is super lightweight, has a 5 point harness/safety system, and has a slim design which is great to fit through a doorway.
The seats even recline and there is a peek-a-boo window in the back that you can easily keep an eye on the kids while they nap.

More Bang for Your Buck
Twin life can get hairy. Having interviewed Alexa not once but numerous times (because well she is my sister), I envy her for all of her hard work.
Keeping it together through stressful times and having twins is something not all of us are capable of doing. Alexa does an Amazing job!

With two other kids, a full-time college student, and being a stay at home mom, at least we get a tiny glimpse into the necessities that she used to help her with twin journey. The funnest part is that all of these items can be used if your only having one baby!
I can attest that I have used several of these items as well and swear by them!
I would love to hear your thoughts on twin parenting! What essentials do you recommend that worked well for you?
